Ms. Olsen studied fine art at the University of Iowa, holds a Masters of Education from the National College of Education in Evanston, IL and completed art education certification at the University of Maryland. She has taught art and education at the secondary and college level. Currently, she teaches figure sculpture at the Colorado Mountain College and is an artist in residence at the Red Brick Center for the Arts in Aspen, Colorado.
To increase her expertise and ability, Ms. Olsen regularly participates in continuing education studio instruction. These learning experiences include instruction at the Evanston Art Center, Evanston, IL, the Palette and Chisel Academy, Chicago, IL, the Anderson Ranch Art Center, Snowmass, CO, and the Loveland Fine Arts Academy, Loveland, CO. She has studied under a number of sculptors, including Kirsten Kokkin, Scott Johnson, Rick Parsons, Susan Clinard, and Paul Lucchesi.
Susan Olsen's figurative sculpture is expressive in nature and reflects her desire to capture both the temporal and spiritual sides of the human experience. Her purpose is to reflect man's struggle to understand his/her unique position in the universe and life community. Paramount in her work is the expression of human emotion and physical movement that is enhanced through unique poses and a clay surface that retains the artist's touch.
